Flat Rate Expenses allowance for employees

What are Flat Rate Expenses you ask? Well, they are sometimes known as Flat Rate Job Expenses. If you are employed in the UK, you may be able to claim a Flat Rate Expenses allowance if you have to spend money on any tools or specialist clothing you need to be able to do your job. You can also claim if you have to clean a uniform that your employer supplies but doesn’t clean for you.

These Flat Rate Expenses allowances are amounts that HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) have generally agreed with trade unions and they cover what is typically spent by employees in many different trades working in over thirty UK industries. However, you don't have to be a member of a trade union to claim the allowance. And you don't have to keep a record of all the individual amounts that you spend each year.

You can go back up to six years to claim the allowance and so possibly get a tax rebate for the period that you previously haven’t claimed. £114 is the average maximum rebate over all of the occupations.

M&I Services offer a Flat Rate Expenses service. They will prepare a claim letter for you to send to your tax office for a fee of £7.00.
